World War 2 Cooking

As we continue with our World War 2 topic, today we cooked following some WW2 recipes.

Year 6 were given 8 recipes to complete and had to follow the recipes and cook with as little help as they could. Everyone worked as a team and some really tasty food was made.  We stuck to the rationing theme as much as we could though we did cheat a little with real eggs rather than dried ones!  We made:

  • Anzac Biscuits
  • Vegetable Pasties
  • Cheese Whirls
  • No-Bake Chocolate Cake
  • Welsh Cakes
  • Rock Buns
  • Prune Flan
  • Spam Fritters

Once the food was cooked we had our own VE party in the hall complete with food tasting, traditional lemonade, dancing and a Wartime singalong!  A big well done to the boys and girls who took part in our dance competition!

World War 2 Recipes 2

Anzac Biscuits


  • 300 g of plain flour (I used wholewheat/meal)
  • 400 g of sugar
  • 200 g of desiccated coconut
  • 200 g of rolled oats
  • 250 g of butter/margarine
  • 2 tablespoon of golden syrup or treacle
  • 4 tablespoons of boiling water
  • 2 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda


  1. Mix the flour, sugar, oats and coconut together
  2. Mix the syrup/treacle and butter together and warm gently until thoroughly mixed.
  3. Mix the boiling water and bicarbonate of soda together and add to the syrup/butter mixture and mix in well
  4. Add the wet mix into the dry mix and bind together
  5. Drop teaspoons of the mixture onto a lightly greased tray or parchment paper and cook for 10 minutes at 180C until golden brown all over
  6. Remove and leave to cool for 10 minutes before placing on a wire rack to finish cooling

No-Bake Chocolate Cake


  • 200g margarine
  • 200g sugar
  • 4 tablespoons of golden syrup or corn syrup
  • 200g cocoa
  • 350g crispy breadcrumbs
  • few drops of vanilla essence



  1. Put the margarine, syrup and sugar in a pan and melt gently over a low heat until the margarine is fully dissolved. Mix well
  2. Remove from heat and add the vanilla essence and the cocoa and mix thoroughly
  3. Pour in breadcrumbs and mix until all coated with the mixture
  4. Press down into 7 inch square greased tin.
  5. Place somewhere cool for at least a few hours until firm
  6. A topping can be added such as chocolate icing
  7. Once set cut into squares

Rock Buns

  • 450g wholemeal/wholewheat flour
  • 8 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice/all spice
  • 100g margarine
  • 100g sugar
  • 100g sultanas or dried mixed fruit
  • 2 eggs or 1 reconstituted dried egg
  • milk
  • 4 teaspoons sugar for topping



  1. Sift the flour, baking powder and spice
  2. Rub in the margarine
  3. Add the sugar, dried fruit and the egg
  4. Gradually add enough milk to make a sticky mixture
  5. Put spoonful onto parchment paper on baking tray ( makes 12-14)
  6. Sprinkle with the sugar
  7. Cook in a hot oven for 12-15 minutes

Wartime Vegetable Turnover



  • 700g of plain (wholewheat) flour with 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • large pinch of salt
  • 180g margarine (or dripping)
  • water



  • 10 oz scrubbed diced cooked potatoes (never remove the skins!)
  • 4 medium carrots diced
  • 1 large onion or 1 leek finely chopped (saute)
  • herbs, salt, pepper



  1. Sift the flour, salt and rub in the margarine
  2. Bind with water
  3. Cook carrots and potatoes until medium soft and then mix gently together in bowl with a little margarine, salt, pepper and herbs
  4. Mix in the onions or leeks
  5. Divide the pastry into 4 pieces and roll out each one into a round
  6. Put mixture into centre of each round
  7. Wet the edges of pastry with water
  8. Pull over one side to the other and press down edges
  9. Prick top of pastry
  10. Brush with a little milk
  11. Bake in hot over (220 C) for 25-30 mins until crisp and brown


Cheese Whirls


  • 700g ounces of wholewheat flour
  • 225g cooking fat/margarine
  • 225g strong cheddar cheese
  • 4 eggs (or dried eggs)
  • 2 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 6 teaspoons of quick rise dried yeast
  • Marmite
  • milk for brushing with


  1. Place all the dry ingredients (except the cheese) in a large bowl and mix together
  2. Break up the margarine and rub in to the dry ingredients
  3. Mix in the grated cheese
  4. Mix in the two beaten eggs
  5. Knead until a dough is formed
  6. Flour your work surface and rolling pin
  7. Break the dough in half
  8. Roll out the dough into an oblong shape about 1/4 inch thick
  9. Spread with Marmite
  10. Roll up into a long swiss roll shape
  11. Slice along with a knife
  12. Place whirls on a greased baking tray
  13. Brush with milk
  14. Place in over at 200 C for about 12-20 mins

Darwen Tower

This month’s walking club was to Darwen Tower.  We set off with some pretty miserable weather however it didn’t stop Year 6 as we had a whopping 22 members of walking club out in the countryside!

The walk consisted of:

  • Slipping down a muddy hill several times
  • Eating lunch on a muddy hill (and then sliding back down)
  • Climbing up a steep part of a hill up to the tower
  • Climbing so high that we were above the clouds (and couldn’t see anything)
  • Walking in wind so strong that it almost blew us all over
  • Finding the tower appear from no-where through the clouds
  • Getting blown into the tower
  • Jumping in the water and getting very wet (even though the teachers said we would be cold)
  • Eating Pot Noodles
  • Drinking hot chocolate back at school

Seder Plate

In RE we have been working towards looking at the Eucharist in Mass.   This took us back to Moses’ times where we learned about the Passover from Egypt.  This then led to us learning about the Passover meal and how this is why Jesus had the Last Supper.

Whilst looking at the Passover meal, we got to try the contents of the Seder plate.  What did you think?
