How amazing are Year 6 at art!

Our focus was to show light and shadow by mixing colours and I think you can see from our display that the class nailed it!

Well done folks…I love your work!

Doug the Sumo

Posted by Mr Waywell on Sep-15-2017

Doug “Kung Po” Smith visited Year 6 this week to tell them all about his recent victory at the Sumo Championships in Japan.

We learned about his journey to success and his inspirations along the way.

Budding reporters, Year 6, are now writing an article to share his triumph!

Town Hall

Posted by Mr Waywell on Sep-8-2017

Today was our first trip of the year.  We visited the town hall to learn about its history.

We learned about:

  • The different mayors Blackpool has had
  • That it was built in Victorian times
  • We saw how decorative it was and learned what the pictures showed
  • We saw a lot of silver ornaments
  • We met the Mayor and Deputy mayor
  • We learned about his role and the ceremonies
  • We got to see his chambers

We then finished the visit with a vintage bus back to school.

What did you think of the trip?  Did you learn anything that I have not added?

Welcome to the new Year 6!

Waterpark Day 2

Posted by Mr Waywell on Jul-4-2017

After a good nights sleep (for most) the children woke with the task of making their own packed lunches.  They were very successful and some delicious dinners were made.

Breakfast was sausage sandwiches which filled us up ready for a day of activities (the weather has been wet all day so wet ones were chosen).

Pink and Yellow groups went Ghyl scrambling in the morning.  Here they had to walk up a ghyl and on the way stop to do some jumps, climb some water falls, slide down the water falls and generally get very wet!  Both groups loved the activity and really got stuck into all the things that they were asked to do.   In the afternoon both groups went sailing.  Again the teams were brilliant and in pairs everyone was able to sail and steer a boat, many picking up some good speed in the wind. Still not wet enough, the children decided that they wanted to jump off the jetty to get even wetter!

Purple group went on the lake for a spot of kayaking to begin.  They all enjoyed themselves and Mrs Whitehead said that they were brilliant!   In the afternoon the group had a go on the indoor climbing wall, all managing to reach the top!  Lots of laughs and music could be heard coming from the climbing room!

Tea tonight was lasagne and was enjoyed by almost everyone! The children are now outside playing hide and seek in the grounds.

Will add more tomorrow.

Waterpark Day 1

Posted by Mr Waywell on Jul-3-2017

Hi everyone.

We arrived safely at 10:30 this morning, much earlier than expected!

The children were amazed at the size of the building and were eager to explore and find their bedrooms.  Once they had unpacked we had sandwiches for lunch and then prepared for our afternoon activity.

In our three groups (pink, purple and yellow) we began the afternoon with some team building activities. Although some groups got off to an unorganised start, everyone was eventually able to complete the tasks successfully with much more team work showing as the day went on.

We ended the afternoon raft-building on Lake Coniston.  Everyone made a raft, including the teachers, and were able to sail around playing different games on the water.  The weather was beautiful and looked for most groups like we would stay dry all afternoon.  The rafts then began to come apart and like dominos, each boat lost a barrel and most of the group ended up in the water.  The class really enjoyed themselves.

After pizza and wedges for tea, the class are now out hill-walking.  They are all very excited and looking forward to getting wet at ghyl scrambling tomorrow!

As part of our topic we looked at how fossils are made and what paleontologists can learn from them.   We also made our own fossils.

WW2 Cooking

Posted by Mr Waywell on Mar-24-2017

As part of our WW2 topic we had a VE Day dance.

Year 6 learned how to dance 1940s style and then we cooked some food based on old “rations” recipes (some were tastier than others!)

Infant Storytime

Posted by Mr Waywell on Mar-24-2017

We’ve been practicing our speaking and reading skills with some infant story books.  Our aim was to impress the infants with our voices, volume and some pretty funny accents!

WARNING… some of these pictures are toooooo cute!

Buddhist Temple

Posted by Mr Waywell on Feb-20-2017

Our World Faith week was based on Buddhism.  As part of our learning, Year 6 took a trip to Manjushri Buddhist Centre in Ulverston.

Whilst there we learned about:

  • different Buddhas
  • how to meditate
  • Buddhist symbols

We also got some time to do some art work; to hug a huge tree and to throw stones into the sea.

Wedding of the Week

Posted by Mr Waywell on Feb-20-2017

I forgot to add the photographs from our “Wedding of the Week”.

In RE Year 6 are learning about the sacraments.  Mr Waywell and Mrs Whitmore decided to get married and show them what a marriage ceremony was like.  Mrs Whitehead took the reigns to perform the ceremony with best men, brides maids and a very supportive group watching the wedding.
